About 10 years ago JOY volunteered to clean up a section of the Cherry Creek Trail as one of our Servant Day projects. A group of volunteers has continued this commitment every month since that first effort. If you have ever traveled the trail between the Parker Rec Center and Mainstreet you will have seen the sign designating Joy Lutheran Church as responsible for adopting that portion of the trail. Although the original commitment required that we clean the trail during the warmer months we have attempted to go out every month on the second Saturday unless snowfall prevents us from seeing what's on the ground. Gradually, we have observed a decrease in the amount of trash and an increase in the appreciation expressed by trail users.
We feel that this is an important stewardship project for our church and an opportunity to fulfill service requirements and goals. In the past, we have enjoyed having families and youth teams join us on our trail walks. It's been a great opportunity to get some fresh air and exercise as well as a chance to become better acquainted with other church members. A dream would be that we have sufficient volunteers to request a second section of the trail!
The town of Parker provides clean-up bags and picks them up, and each participant should wear gloves (and masks at this time). We meet on the second Saturday behind (east of) the Rec Center at the dog station. In the warmer months we meet at 8:30a, and during the colder months at 9:30a. There is a parking lot behind the ball fields. The city requires that participants sign a release form before working on the trail.
